Most inland Southern California homes burn their fireplace a dozen times a winter, produce minimal creosote, and barely stress the top of the flue. That's not Brentwood. Homes along Topanga Canyon and Old Topanga Road run woodburning fireplaces hard from November through March. Dense oak and eucalyptus fuel produces heavy second- and third-degree creosote. That tarry buildup doesn't just coat the liner. It migrates upward and deposits on the underside of the chimney cap screen, gradually restricting airflow and trapping heat against the spark arrestor mesh.
